We began by creating a web application that allows relocating consumers to create their own virtual record of their household goods (HHG) inventory with their mobile device. With guidance from a Serbian consultant, a consumer anywhere in the world can capture a permanent record of her HHG in less than 30 minutes. There’s no delay waiting for a moving company estimator to call and schedule a visit at his convenience days or weeks in the future. There’s no waiting around for the estimator to show up (oftentimes late), and the consumer never has to feel uncomfortable with a stranger in her home. This seemingly simple innovation has had a transformative effect on the industry. The in-home survey has traditionally been a huge pain-point for the consumer that almost always got the relationship with the moving company off to a bad start. With the Shyft app, the survey/inventory process begins immediately. The consumer controls the timing, she enjoys her interaction with her informative consultant and she receives her relocation estimate in a matter of hours, not days. The relationship with the moving company quickly gets off on the right foot. The video-survey function is far more sophisticated than a simple video recording of the consumer’s belongings. It involves a patented system allowing the sharing of three separate video streams between the consumer’s mobile device and the consultant’s computer. The consultant captures and annotates screenshots to create a more accurate inventory, and the permanent record eliminates the uncertainty. The technology has proved its worth by producing dramatically improved consumer satisfaction scores for our video surveys as compared to the in-home model. Once the inventory is delivered to the consumer, our web-based communications platform allows her to select video-chat, telephone, SMS and/or email to communicate with Shyft experts who describe the available relocation services. The consumer selects the services that suit her needs and budget, and she can make all the necessary arrangements with approved third-party service providers through the single communications channel. This one-stop, start-to-finish service makes it possible for the consumer to avoid the obfuscation, communications hand-offs and breakdowns, delays and other annoyances that have traditionally made the relocation process so maddening.
